What makes it different
Suzhou's classical gardens reward close attention to courtyards, rocks and framed views. Hangzhou's West Lake offers a larger landscape of water, causeways and hills. Both are UNESCO-listed cultural settings, but the experiences are different; choose them for that contrast rather than treating them as interchangeable water-town stops.
How to shape the days
In our Shanghai and Jiangnan journey, the sequence runs through Suzhou and Wuzhen toward Hangzhou. Give a garden a focused visit and leave time for neighborhood walks; do not try to cover every major garden. A water-town overnight is optional planning territory, with a different atmosphere and hotel requirement from a day visit.
Connections & practical choices
Rail can connect city centers, but hotels, gardens and water-town entrances still require local transfers. Compare end-to-end options before choosing rail or a private vehicle. Finishing in Hangzhou can reduce backtracking if the onward flight works; otherwise include the return to Shanghai in the schedule and budget.
