Mobile Payments in China: What Visitors Should Know

International visitors can often use major Chinese payment apps, but a backup card and some cash remain sensible.

Set up before the trip

Install the official app, link an eligible international bank card and complete any identity checks before departure. App availability, limits and card support can vary by country and provider.

Expect different merchant methods

Some merchants present a code for you to scan; others scan your payment code. Never share a verification code, and confirm the merchant name and amount before approving payment.

Carry a backup

Keep a physical bank card and a modest amount of renminbi for situations where a foreign card, network connection or app verification does not work. Notify your bank about travel if required.
