Beijing vs Shanghai: Where Should You Start?

Both cities are excellent gateways, but they create very different first impressions of China.

Choose Beijing for imperial history

Beijing brings together the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, hutong neighborhoods and Great Wall day trips. It rewards travelers who enjoy museums, monumental spaces and deeper historical context.

Choose Shanghai for contemporary energy

Shanghai is easier for skyline views, design, dining and short extensions to Hangzhou, Suzhou or a water town. The experience feels faster, more international and closely connected to modern urban China.

Use both when time allows

With seven days or more, the high-speed rail link makes a two-city journey practical. Start in the city that best matches your international flight and finish where onward travel is simplest.
